FAQs

As an independent contractor, how do I apply for unemployment benefits?

New guidance from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) for independent contractors: If you submitted an unemployment application on or before April 4, 2020, YOU NEED TO APPLY AGAIN. If you submitted your application on or after April 5, 2020, you do not need to reapply. In both cases, independent contractors will be denied state benefits when DEO processes your application. Once denied, DEO will contact you with instructions on how to apply for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits. This DEO flowchart helps explain the process.
